This autobiographical song is close to my heart. Vulnerable and exposing, it details the strife of growing up with generational pain and the strength it took to overcome it all.
lyrics
Maybe she was 8 years old, a fall breeze through the window
Supper on the stove
Maybe she had something to say but she got choked up on smoke anyway so
She let it go
Maybe her imagination was bigger than her situation
She liked to hope
She dreamed of wishing wells, the wilderness and fairy tales, so she clung to those
And
Words were hard, but emotions ran deep
Southern roots had that mystique
In those days as it was told, the saying goes
We all had hard rows to hoe, hard rows to hoe
Her town always looked the same and everybody seemed to know her name, she wanted that to change
Maybe she was ready to go, had a broke down car and no hand to hold, but she was bold
Maybe her bad decisions, would lead to revelations, open up her eyes
She dreamed of butterflies, mama’s cornbread and blackberry vines, she held those tight in her mind
Cause
Words were hard, and emotions ran deep
Her Southern roots gave her that mystique
And as she would grow, she came to know
We all have hard rows to hoe, hard rows to hoe
She’ll never forget where the water ran cold
Through that old creek where she played and made
A family of pebbles and stones, painted them deep blue, red, and gold
Glued them together, set it on her dresser, pretended the were happy as ever because she wanted to believe
But
Words were hard, and emotions ran deep
Her Southern roots gave her that mystique
In that moment she came to know, as the story goes
We all have hard rows to hoe, hard rows to hoe
